Divine Appointments

Acts 8:26 “And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.”

Often, much of the world goes about its day in reactionary mode – allowing things to roll on in their course; come what may and take it as it comes. But have you ever had a chance meeting; a crossing of paths with someone whose influence that day became significant in your life or theirs?

Living a life with such expectations can be so very exciting. Not knowing who or what may happen on any given day is cause for excitement. But magnify that excitement with the fact the born again child of God has something to offer that the rest of the world does not is quite extraordinary.

1 Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:”

When we are ready to testify of the eternally secure position we have in Jesus Christ, we can speak out with confidence and joy. Knowing that the ones whom you and I will meet may never again meet, we must make every preparation to make those chance meetings; those divine appointments, most effective.

Can you lead a soul to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? Can you give your testimony of how you got saved? Do you have the Word of God to back up the claims of salvation, eternal security and God as Sovereign? The Word of God is so vital to our witness:

Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

1 Peter 1:23 “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”

Even in the account of Philip meeting the Ethiopian eunuch;

Acts 8:30-35 “And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias (Isaiah), and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.”

God has special promises regarding His Word:

Isaiah 55:11 “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

Matthew 5:18 “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”

Matthew 4:4 “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Our loving Heavenly Father so desires to use us to be a light in this world that grows darker by the moment. Our preparation is paramount to the work He desires to do through us. When we look to Him; for wisdom, for understanding, for power, protection, provision and perspective, He, in turn, gives as would suit the situation and circumstance.

Just a few weeks ago, my son and I were out for our church, handing out tracts and confronting those we met with the gospel. I came across a young man sitting on the steps of a building in a local park. I introduced myself and we became acquainted. I soon learned that he had recently been incarcerated and had been thinking of the events that led him there and the subsequent change that happened while there.

While in jail, he read his bible and knew that he needed something different. He knew that the friends he had prior to his sentencing had not influenced him to do right. He prayed to God and asked to be shown what he must do. I and my son happened upon him just a few days later.

I was able to lead him to put his trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and then he related the story i just told you. I told him, “Our prayer in coming out today was to be used to help someone who was seeking help”. “Your prayer was to have God help you”. “God moved our paths to cross and the rest is now history.

God can and will have someone you and I can help today. Asking to be shown the way, having our hearts prepared and waiting on God to move can allow our days to be filled with such anticipation and expectation that there will not be many dull moments.

So, schedule your day for a divine appointment with the God of Heaven and He may very well have you be a divine instrument in the life of another. The results are eternal!
