Romans 15:13 “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
Listen to the nightly news for just five minutes and you will feel an overwhelming sense of negativity and helplessness. The worldly solutions have never worked – self-medication, work, make money, immorality, drugs, depression or ultimately suicide. None of those things bring satisfaction or happiness. What do we have to combat all that is bad in this world? What do we need to overcome this seemingly tragic place we live?
There is truly only one solution to all that is wrong in the world – God. Some would say that is far too simplistic, others to vague and some just lack faith enough to believe that there is anything beyond what they can see. But this verse exposes just Who God is to us – He is Hope. It is not that He possesses hope to give us, He is the essence of hope. He is the source of hope. Outside of God and hope in any other person or thing will not be complete.
The Christian’s enemy, the devil, seeks to deceive our hearts to think that God doesn’t care, cannot forgive or that we have done something so horrific that God cannot love us or accept us any longer. All of which are lies.
1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
God will NEVER run out of mercy for us:
Lamentations 3:22-23 “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
His love is immeasurable:
Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Our acceptance is through His shed blood:
Ephesians 1:6-7 “To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”
God tells us in Hosea that we will perish because we do not know Him.
Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:…”
So, what you do not know CAN kill you! If only those who contemplate suicide could hear of how much God loves them. If only those in despair could see that the God of all hope cares for them and loves them beyond any mistakes they have made. If those in extreme depression could see that the Holy Spirit is the power to release them from their bonds. If only…
A soldier held prisoner holds onto the hope that he will not be forgotten and left to die. A child clings to the hope that their parents will give the love, acceptance and security that they need. Hope in our government is misplaced and will never satisfy. Hope in another person to make you happy will end poorly when they fail. Hope in things will leave you wanting.
Wherever you find yourself today, know that when you go to God, you CAN find hope – He promised… and He is a God who always keeps His promises!
