Psalm 16:11 “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
There are those, who in their lifetime, will have spent literally thousands of dollars for concerts, plays, movies or productions to view some singer, actor, actress that suits their fancy. Tickets to hear one human being sing to another human being is, at times, astronomical… and utterly a waste of money.
Yes, sad to say, I have been one of those from time to time who have spent more than they should on something that has no eternal value. But I have learned, some very painful lessons by the way; about the responsibility of the stewardship, we, as children of God, have been given with our money.
Money is a tool. The psalmist knew all too well the power money has:
Proverbs 30:8-9 “Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.”
Riches or poverty – they both have the power to take us away from God. But, taking a step back, we see that the view is to see it as God would have it.
I have come to realize that the most important thing on this earth is for all to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and at the very least have the opportunity to receive Him as their Savior. C.T. Studd once said;
“Only one life twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.”
The passage, a favorite of mine for many reasons took on different meaning as I skipped over the beginning part to the ‘in thy presence is fulness of joy‘.
In the beginning it says; ““Thou wilt shew me the path of life:” This is an interactive relationship with my God that I need to take part.
I must know there is a path set for my life.
I cannot choose my path, nor trust myself to know the way.
God chooses that path and holds me to following it – to finish MY course and run MY race.
To follow, I must be submitted, committed and surrendered – willing to obey.
So that when I do what is commanded me, I will enjoy that presence that brings such joy. So often, we forget that God is a God of order and sets things in a specific order for a reason. Some will try to manufacture the presence of God with a feeling. God tells us in His Word that you will not have proper worship without the Bible.
John 4:24 “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
The little ‘s’ spirit is that of the born again, child of God. No unsaved person can worship properly without having first been saved… period. Our spirit is what we bring. I have learned that my spirit must be free from those things that are a hindrance – namely sin.
Cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ is not a ‘one and done’ affair. It is daily, hourly, minute by minute consciousness of the dirt and filth of my sin between me and the Father.
When my spirit is right and clean, then I can come to worship. But it must be in truth. The Word of God is the only truth that brings true worship – not music. Songs, good songs that contain biblical truth are good to aid worship, but it is not the focal point of worship. Otherwise God would have said; “Worship me in song…” wouldn’t He?
Music affects us deeply. Good, godly Christian music will open our hearts and minds to the truth they sing. We truly fail when the music or the singer is the focus and not the truth we are to truly use in worshiping our God.
There is so much that can be written here, but please don’t think me one to put fire on your zeal – all I truly wish to point out is that music without truth will beget a wildfire that will not lead to true worship.
God knows the path that He has set for you and I. It was set long before you and I were ever born.
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Simply, and lastly this morning – go to God and ask which path He would have you take today. When you find it – follow. Then, you will experience that fulness of joy and be able to testify of the wondrous power of the presence of Almighty God!
