2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
So many today, live in such fear. Fear of failure. Fear of embarrassment. Fear of rejection. Some even have a fear of success. Others have been so victimized by their past that they are held in bondage to it. Some have been beaten down by voices of their past that all they hear is “Loser”, “Worthless”, and much, much worse.
Many a child of God will come for help and seek counsel and leave despairing, dejected, depressed. They seek a refuge; a safe place. They want all the bad to go away and someone to fight for them. They have been told they have no strength, no voice, and no power. Time spent in bondage to these voices only lengthen the chains and increase the weight of the oppression they feel.
Overwhelmed. Powerless. Without hope.
Over time, they begin to believe the voices are true and right. They ARE a loser. They ARE worthless. They begin to gather evidence to support the ‘facts’ they see as truth. They solidify their case when those who are supposed to help are put at a distance and perceived as ‘uncaring’, ‘indifferent’, and just plain ignorant of their helpless estate.
Anger arises. Their sight is skewed by a filter of their own making. “No one knows what I am going through!” “Everyone thinks I’m dumb.” “They are all talking about me…” The voices increase their intensity and soon, the divide between the child of God and the very people who can help is so wide, it seems impossible that anyone can do anything to help!
Hope seemingly lost, they turn to the world for answers instead of turning to God. Some will say, “I did pray. I have been praying! But God hasn’t answered!” They have given up on God because He didn’t answer – He didn’t care!
I read a statement today that struck me:
“When fear knocks at the door, send faith to answer it.”
If asked ‘What is the opposite of fear?’ we might answer ‘faith’. Biblically, God answers for us:
1 John 4:17, 18 “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
The type of love God mentions here is ‘agape’ love or unconditional love. It is His perfect love for us, but also our love for Him. His love covers me. His love undergirds me. His love is the foundation for all I am and will ever be. His love saved me. His love keeps me. His love looks beyond my fault and sees my needs. His love protects, provides, empowers and points me in the right direction.
His presence is ever with me:
Hebrews 10:5 “…for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
Fear has a way of bringing our focus inward. Love, always outward. In the midst of all the turmoil, the voices and the oppression, there is One voice we need to focus on:
Jeremiah 31:3 “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.”
Love has action:
1 John 3:16 “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
Love moves us to do for others what we would want done for us. When I show love to others, I feel loved of God.
Matthew 25:40 “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
To those who have long been in bondage, I hear you say, “I can’t” or “What about my needs?” It must be a choice of your will to turn to God in faith and trust He knows best how to cast out the fear that has you bound. For some, it will take an unraveling of all the lies we have told ourselves over the years and replace them with truth.
You ARE loved!
You ARE worthy!
You ARE accepted!
You ARE God’s child!
This is not meant to be a thorough counsel on ridding yourself of the fear in your life; but it is meant to point to the cure – God, and only God has that kind of power. His love for you and His love through you helping others will demonstrate and allow you to begin to collect evidence that He is real; He DOES care for you and you are NOT alone.
Fear is of the devil
Fear divides and ultimately destroys.
If you are a child of God, you have the power at your disposal to leave that fear and its shackles behind.
Start the journey today – do not wait another moment.
GOD LOVES YOU!
