Jeremiah 8:20 “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.”
My Dad grew up on a farm. With ten other siblings, they had many mouths to feed and post depression era was hard enough. Stretching meals and living off what you grew made for lean times.
Growing up, we farmed as well. My uncle had allowed us to farm about an acre of land on his farm so we could grow vegetables both to eat and to sell. The work was long and arduous, but, when the harvest time came, it was all hands on deck to make sure we got everything the Lord had blessed us with.
Dad was particular to teach us how to go over each plant to make sure we got all the ripe beans and peas. He taught us how to look at carrots and beets to know when to pull them up. He did not want to miss or pass over any fruit or increase God had provided.
Spiritually, I think God is a farmer.
He likens the souls of man as a field ripening unto harvest.
John 4:35 “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.”
We become great procrastinators at something we do not want to do or need to apply energy, learning and time. Being a witness for Christ takes time. Being a witness means I must learn how to present the gospel. Being a witness means, I must make the time to go. We all make the time for the things we deem important to us.
So, we must obey the command to go and make it a priority in our life.
God knew the call would have go out over and over. We must consider the urgency as well.
Luke 10:2 “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”
Proverbs 20:4 “The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.”
I love the descriptive language of the King James Bible – think of it – ‘sluggard’ – not a name one would like to put beside theirs.
But we, who make excuse, will become that if we do not take heed to the call.
There is a harvest – already white; meaning it is almost over ripe. God tells us it is urgent and we must take u in our hearts that same urgency as well.
