2 Corinthians 3:4-6 “And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”
SUFFI’CIENCY, noun The state of being adequate to the end proposed.
Ability – adequate power.
Many write of the sufficiency of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Few demonstrate it. The ability to fully acknowledge our weakness before God and desire Him only to work and speak through us is an amazing thing when we are able to give that control over to God.
It is not some mystical, magical dust or potion. It is not some freak accident that gives us super powers. It is seeing God for who He really is; knowing tht His promises are real and backed up with evidence that whom I am trusting can and will do that which He says He can do.
I am a preacher and a teacher of the gospel. I can study and research a certain topic or truth. We call that ‘adorning the gospel’. Yet, I have grown to be able to trust the Holy Spirit enough to lead and guide me, to give a truth; adorn the gospel on a moment’s notice.
If I trust my intellect, or if the source of my knowledge is whatever it is I can get my hands on to study; history and reading resources to gather evidence for what it is I am teaching or preaching then becomes an effort of the flesh. When I trust the Spirit of God to lead me, to guide what it is He decides to say and give; then, He gets the glory for what is said – not me.
If you are a member of a local, New Testament church, you should pray for your pastor to be led of the Holy Spirit of God. You should pray against those influences that would cause his ego to excel above that of his trust in the Spirit’s leadership in his life. Many a pastor who has been led of God and gains noteriety for it, falls prey to the fleshly sin of pride.
Many a pastor will tell you that God gives him certain members that keep him humble. Ultimately though, it must be his spirit; sweetly submitted to the Holy Spirit of God to deliver truth through him.
Every Sunday school teacher and member that preaches needs to understand fully the power we can wield if all are in accord with the power in us – the Holy Spirit of Almighty God.
But this is not just a “Sunday” thing. I must seek out the Spirit’s power to be the best employee possible; to be the best husband, the best father, the best brother possible. I will gain remaining fruit in my life if I give over the controls of my everday life to the One who has already been down that path; who knows the way wherein I should travel.
Purpose today to give up trusting you intellect and any other fleshly device that would usurp the Holy Spirit’s ability to lead your life. Cleanse the path from sin and any obstruction that would obstruct the way.
Then, we can rejoice – truly – in what God can and will do through us!
