Opposites

Joel 2:12-13Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.”

God has, from the beginning, made it very clear that who we are on the outside should match what we are on the inside.

He said today: “rend your heart, not your garments…”

Religion is all about the outward show and Biblical Christianity is all about who we are and what we are on the inside. Opposites.

Anyone in the flesh can do things, say things and be outwardly for awhile and look ‘saved’. We justify our sinful ‘slips’ as the carnal part of us slipping out and we can keep somewhat of a ‘status quo’ with those around us.

With the bar set so low in churches today, there are many among us who are in desperate need of biblical salvation.

Two quick thoughts today:

  1. Is there any evidence this week that you are a child of God? And…
  2. What is God dealing with you about – to grow, to learn, to cast off or put on?

The first I ask that you be brutally honest with yourself. God says “Be ye holy for I am holy.” Are you holy? He says:

Matthew 28:19-20Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Have you opened your mouth recently to witness for Christ? Have you given a gospel tract? Jesus said:

Mark 8:38Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Do you have any evidence that the Holy Spirit resides in you?

Galatians 5:22-24 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

Secondly, is there some sin that God has been convicting you about that needs to be dealt with, confessed and repented? Is there a barrier to your taking the next step in your walk with God? Is it fear? Worry? Doubt? Is it that we are so taken with the worldly that we have no time for the spiritual?

If we find ourselves at odds with whatever it is God is dealing with us, we are on the wrong side. David said in his confession:

Psalms 51:3For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.”

Transgression is not just ‘sin’. It is a willful stepping over the line of sin. David was saying; ‘I knew it was wrong; I knew that God said it was wrong, but, I went after it just the same.’

If our hearts are not pricked with conviction over the transgressions we commit, we are too far away (apathetic) from God or unsaved.

Again, ask yourself those two questions:

  1. Is there any evidence this week that you are a child of God? And…
  2. What is God dealing with you about – to grow, to learn, to cast off or put on?

Be truly honest with yourself and with God and see if there isn’t some way back to a close, personal, intimate walk with our Heavenly Father.
