The Reality of Hell
Luke 16:22-23 “And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.”
Skeptics. That is what most of us are when it comes to this place called Hell. Oh, we may claim that we think there exists a place… somewhere, called Hell. But to truly believe that there is a place where souls who die without Christ will spend eternity eludes even the best of us.
It is a place of the soul:
Proverbs 23:14 “Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.”
Jesus described for us what this real place called Hell is like:
Mark 9:43-44 “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”
It is an unquenchable fire. It is a place where worms – it is assumed – flesh-eating worms – never die.
Hell is deep:
Deuteronomy 32:22 “For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.”
Job 11:7-8 “Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?”
The wicked go there:
Psalms 9:17 “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”
It is a place of sorrow and pain:
Psalms 18:5 “The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.”
Psalms 116:3 “The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.”
There is no quenching to the thirst you will have.
Luke 16:24 “And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.”
It is a place where the Lucifer and those who followed him were sent:
2 Peter 2:4 “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;”
Once you die and are sent to Hell, there is a final judgment. After that judgment, all who were in Hell are cast into the lake of fire and brimstone:
Revelation 20:14-15 “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
It is a place of torment.
Revelation 20:10 “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
It is a place of utter darkness where there is no light, no love, no joy, and no happiness.
Matthew 8:12 “But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
There are literally hundreds of verses in the Bible that speak of this place called Hell.
Real people go there.
Real people are there now.
It may very well be that there are those you and I have known that are in Hell this very moment. Those that are there are praying that you and I would take up the evangelistic call to tell anyone and everyone NOT to come that place.
Luke 16:27-28 “Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.”
Many of us can remember the time we got saved. We can recall the person that witnessed to us and possibly some of the things that were said. For some of us, it was the reality of a place called Hell that shook us and brought us to a decision to truly see the consequences of our actions.
If I do not continue to remind myself that Hell is real, I will grow cold and apathetic toward my duty to warn any and all about the coming judgment to their soul.
Take a look around when you attend your church today. Rest assured, there is someone who needs to repent of their unbelief and trust Jesus Christ as their Savior. They may be a first-time visitor or even a longtime church member. You cannot know.
We must all pray that the Holy Spirit of God lead us and guides us to those who may be given their last chance to hear the gospel and be saved.
Hell is a real place and people who die without being saved go there.
