Proverbs 4:5-7 “Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
It doesn’t take much to acknowledge that things are much different than they once were… why is that? Are we smarter now than before? Do we attribute it to ‘progress’? If so, what are we progressing to? What will we become when we arrive at our destination?
Man has often been found to chase after the new shiny object before him; leaving the tried and true behind. We do it with possessions. We do it with careers. We do it with relationships. If we are not grounded spiritually, we will do the same with God.
Our enemy, Satan, has watched us through the centuries and has served up a cornucopia; a buffet line of all those ‘shiny’ things we look at to see just what it is that catches our eye. He then fires a barrage of fiery darts at us to entice us; to draw us away after our own lusts – to sin of our own volition – ultimately, to destroy us.
James 1:13-15 “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”
Our loving, Heavenly Father gave us armor to defend against these attacks.
Ephesians 6:16 “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”
Knowing then, that I must be rooted and grounded in faith, I must look where my roots are drawing nutrients from.
Psalms 1:3 “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
Like that tree by the river, we can have the richest nutrients for our soul and spirit when we are planted in the Word of God.
Psalms 1:2 “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”
We counteract the appeal of the ‘shiny’ in our life when we are rooted to the Source of all life and wisdom.
When I evaluate my own desire for the ‘shiny’ in my life, I must exercise caution to act impulsively or hastily. Satan often uses smoke and mirrors to hide his true nature and intent. What may look enticing on the outside can often be a bitter pill to swallow.
I thank God He has made it simple for me to obtain wisdom.
James 1:5-6 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.”
Wisdom given to a child will soon be tossed aside for the next shiny thing that comes along. Wisdom given to a fool will be lost to whatever captures the heart next. But wisdom given to one whose grounded, rooted and planted in God will grow and yield such amazing fruit.
I must embrace the wisdom that only God can give. I have made some life changin decisions that have turned out beautifully. But, for me to take the credit for such a decision would be foolish. I must understand and accept the fact that it is God who gave me the ability to decide.
Humility is not a ready trait of those who chase after shiny things. Having a teachable heart is not something those who desire the ‘New and Improved’ version of Christianity.
So, today, would you be teachable? Moldable? Pliable in the hands of the Master? God promised that wisdom is there for anyone who asks. Make wisdom one of the daily nutrients that your soul and spirit need every single day. Then, plant yourself in the Word of God daily.
Let this new year be one of such growth that it even surprises you!
