Judges 17:6 “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”
The picture I have in my mind is one of chaos.
No ruler. No government. No means of keeping the peace.
The ‘right’ that prevailed was what each man thought was right for him. Looking at the world today, we seem to be headed that way again.
Unrestrained, man will devolve to become like those in Noah’s day.
Genesis 6:5 “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
Indeed, that will come after the rapture of the church and before the tribulation. But my thoughts are more along this vein: What is the standard for right and when we depart from it, how do we restore it?
The most potent force in the universe is that which created it. The Word of God tells us that God created all that we see in six, literal, twenty-four hour days. Men have their theories and conjecture about that very truth; but, it doesn’t fit the Bible narrative.
Throughout the ages, man has tried to theorize, summarize and (pardon my use of the word) bastardize the Word of God to fit their way of thinking. We are reminded by God:
Romans 9:20 “Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?”
I guess each of us must come to the place of acceptance that we are not our own. I am not in full possession and control of all that will come to me – though I may exert great energy to do so.
Trusting Christ as my Savior was, is, and will ever be the best decision I have ever made in my life. With that decision came so many things that, over the years, I have learned and am learning, about who I am; who God is and what it means to be His child.
One of the universal truths has set my perspective.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
When you and I buy something, we take possession and use it as we see fit; for it is ours to do so. It is the same with God, but with one caveat – He has allowed us to choose whether or not we want what He wants for us. In that choice, we are allowed to show our love, gratitude, and express our indebtedness for the high price that was paid for our soul by following in obedience that which has for us.
Some are commands that He wants and expects that we follow – again with the full opportunity to walk away or obey. God gives us principles and truths by which to order our lives following the guidance He provides in and through the Holy Spirit that dwells within.
So, as we see the chaos around us elevate and increase, we must look to the Author and Finisher of our faith. In the end, I must come to this conclusion:
God is right – all the time – every time.
Whether I agree with Him or not doesn’t matter. Whether or not I like what it is He has for me is irrelevant – not insignificant. Only, you and I cannot know any better happiness, peace, and joy outside of following the will of God for our lives.
God is the Author of right. Best to acknowledge and submit to it.
