1 Samuel 5:3-5 “And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again. And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him. Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.”
Imagine a god that you have to set up in his place because he had fallen.
Imagine praying to a god that you had fashioned out of wood.
The false hope given to the Philistines that day had come when the One, True and Living God had allowed the Israelites to be defeated and the ark of God taken captive. The army of the Philistines had known of the power that God had displayed in Egypt. There was great fear in the camp that day.
We think; ‘I would never bow to a god I made with my own hands’.
Yet, today, we bow at the altar of our job or career. We bow at the feet of our children. We bow to our bank accounts, our portfolios and in wanting the more exceptional things in life.
We work to gain possessions. Whether houses, lands or things; we think they will give some semblance of comfort, status, acceptance or value in man’s eyes.
We seek pleasure, ease, and amusement. We lift those who entertain us as if they hold some value or wisdom we should follow. Yet, the very venue they present to us breaks every one of the ten commandments of God in the first fifteen minutes of viewing.
We idolize sports figures for the talent and ability they display. We turn a blind eye to the fact that they live like the devil and even justify it because of the pressure of being in the limelight and having to perform at such a level.
We focus on technology and what we feel it can do for us. It was presented as a tool to make us more productive, more efficient and today we are neither.
Social media today is a stark reminder of who is the god of your life. If you cannot put your finger on just who is your god, look at the pictures you post. Who is in the majority of them? The very definition of ‘selfie’ is perverse, narcissistic, and reveals to whom you bow down.
And what of our politics? Our music and those who create it? Hunting?
Health and exercise have been a craze we follow after. We tell ourselves we don’t worship anyone but God. Yet, we go to a place where there are more mirrors than the average home!
We could go on and on with a scathing review of all the altars at which we bow today. So how do we break free?
Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Satan works hard to capture our attention and fill our minds and time with all manner of things that will divide us. Our time is so fractured and divided; we cannot focus for one minute without being interrupted by a notification on our phones.
We have almost lost the ability to be quiet and hear the voice of God amidst all the noise and clamor that surrounds us.
A woman who was confronted with her sin by Jesus was shown a very cogent truth:
John 4:22-24 “Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
I have a living spirit in me because it has been made alive by the Holy Spirit of God. Only being born again can bring about that change.
Lucifer sought to be the one worshipped.
Isaiah 14:12-15 “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”
He knows full well the fruit of a heart given over to worship. It is where place our focus that truly matters!
When we allow the things of the world to crowd God out, they have been made to take God’s rightful place in our life. As difficult as it may be to admit to our worship of any other god than the One, True and Living God; it may very well be time for some ‘spring cleaning’ of the soul.
We give all the other ‘gods’ in our life position and place with the amount of time we spend with each of them. Take action to put the real God back on the throne of your life – He deserves first place!
