Luke 24:44-45 “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,”
We have all struggled to understand the scriptures, and here we find the key to that understanding. It was Jesus that opened it for the disciples. But what was it for us?
We find the answer in John.
John 16:13-14 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
The beautiful gift of the indwelling Spirit of God is, for us, the very reason we can understand the scriptures. It is his job to lead us and guide us into all truth. Our free will is the only thing that stands in the way of understanding.
The prophet Daniel was told some pretty fantastical things that genuinely needed understanding once they were given. But it wasn’t for him to know.
Daniel 12:8-9 “And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.”
Our pride seeks for us to possess knowledge instead of depending on the Omniscient One; All-Knowing. I find we want knowledge to have some semblance of control of our own life; control of our own destiny.
Yet, there are things God tells us that it is not for us to know now. Simply, submit, and obey. That confidence can only come when we trust the One to whom we relinquish control.
My mind is eased when I realize and accept that I am the purchased possession of God Almighty. I am no longer my own. I belong to Him; lock, stock, and barrel. The more I know my God, the greater peace and confidence I have in Him. The higher the confidence, the easier it is to leave off that which I do not understand until it is time for me to know it.
I guess another key is that we are continually seeking Him. When I am continually seeking Him; His wisdom. and understanding, I can be assured that I will be given what I need when I need it.
Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Luke 12:11-12 “And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.”
As we begin another week, allow God to help you understand. He tells us as much when we are seeking wisdom.
Proverbs 4:5-8 “Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.”
Principal. Elemental. Key. That is what wisdom and understanding should be to all of us. But, both wisdom and understanding come from God, and we cannot get past it until we humble ourselves to ask.
James 1:5-6 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.”
Happy Monday All!
