Hard

Proverbs 13:15 Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.”

Some will say, “It’s hard to be a Christian”, or “I just can’t do all God asks of me.” I will agree only to this; there is a level of difficulty in anything we do. But, when you consider this: as a child of God, I have promises to aid me in whatever and wherever my God tells me or sends me.

I have been promised to be an overcomer.

1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

1 John 5:4-5 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

My position with God was settled once I received Christ.

Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:”

We are given what I need to overcome fear.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Romans 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

I can take solace in the fact that I am not alone.

Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

When I am tempted or in the midst of a trial, I can know that God is with me.

1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Even when I sin, I can be restored to fellowship.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

For the newly saved, it becomes a matter of perseverance. Because we have sown bad seed previous to being saved, that fruit will come – it is inevitable. But to persevere and experience the fruit of newly planted seeds of righteousness will begin to show eventually.

There will be a time when God has to correct us. We must honestly believe that He does it because He loves us.

Proverbs 3:12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”

Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.”

His correction will yield good fruit.

Hebrews 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”

But, when we give in to the ‘victim mentality,’ we begin to make excuse as to why this happened, why we are not to blame, and why God should “fix it.’ The underlying premise is that I have a say in the path and direction of my life.

At salvation, we lost all claim to possession of my newly saved body, mind, and soul.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

We ought to consider the price paid for our freedom. It was a price that we could never have paid to gain or earn Heaven. All our work, all our life’s toil would have still garnered a destination in Hell.

Thanks be to God for His Son, and the salvation offered to us in Jesus Christ!

But when you and I begin to think we know better than God, we stand in opposition to that which He has already created and destined us to be.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

When you and I begin to desire things more worldly, than godly, we will not only stray from where God would have us to be; we become His enemy.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

A transgressor is one who will willingly go against that which he or she knows to be right. God is warning us that to follow that way is what is truly hard.

To come out from underneath the umbrella of His favor, blessing, and protection means I will reap what I sow in time.

Galatians 6:7-9 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Herein we find the remedy; to persevere. An old-time preacher once said, “Do right till the stars fall.” (Bob Jones Sr.). And so we must. Doing right is not always easy. Doing right is not always popular. Doing right may not always bring good fruit right away. But, the promise is that when we are not weary in doing right, we will see fruit – if we don’t stop.

That same preacher; Bob Jones Sr. said:

“The measure of your character is what it takes to stop you.”

Some, when they come to Christ, may not have had much character with which to speak. But, God knew what He was getting when He saved us. Character is formed in work.

Transgressors despise work. They take the easy path. They look for the shortcut. Their first and only consideration is what will benefit them. When that is satisfied, they are no more to be found.

Next time God asks something that seems “hard”, thank Him for the opportunity to grow. Ask for the strength and the grace to do that which He chose you to do.

One of the most unbelievable parts of the Christian life is that that which God calls me to do, can only be done in His power; by His guidance and direction, and, in the end, I am rewarded for that which He does in and through me!

Then, I will not be thinking of how “hard” it was to do what He asked; I will only be praising Him for what He was able to accomplish with this old lump of clay!

When you’re weary – keep going.

When you feel like quitting – press on!

When it feels as if you are battling Satan himself – call upon the One who called you and ask for the deliverance He has already promised to give.

1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

  1. Good truth here. Thank you.

At the core of this is overcoming but one thing, the ‘self’ nature. That is our greatest enemy and it resides squarely within. It cannot be cast out, only overcome through humility and repentance. Only when we lose ‘self’ will we gain Christ in His fullness.
