Be Ready

1 Peter 3:14-16 But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.”

It is interesting when coming into a new job and declaring that I am a born-again Christian, that someone speaks up and testifies of their faith in Christ. Before their declaration, you could not tell by their speech, their conduct, nor work ethic, that they had anything remotely to do with biblical Christianity.

When the saved child of God looks like the world, acts like the world, and talks like the world, how can we be the light and difference-maker when we are incognito?

Our job here on earth is to be salt and light.

Salt brings out the flavor. Light allows us to see what is hidden in the shadows. The world cannot see their way clear to salvation without being shown the way. We, who are saved must be that light.

I adopted a saying when asked, “How are you?” I reply;

“One day closer to Heaven!”

Some are taken aback that I didn’t give the generic response that most give. Others may engage in several ways.

“I’ve never heard that before.”

“That sure is morbid.”

“No one can know for sure.”

What it does do, is it opens the door for me to give the reason for the hope I have in Jesus Christ. I have a friend who initiates a conversation this way:

“Do you know what day this is?”

After they wrack their brain to think of the day’s significance, he replies;

“This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

As children of God, we need to find ways to open conversations; to turn people’s minds to the eternal. When we fail to be the instigator, the opportunities are few and far between. When we find the way and think of new and different ways, God can use us over and over again to meet new people.

When I read,

James 4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

I think of how short my time here on earth compared to an eternity in Heaven. The one thing I can do here on earth that I will be unable to do in Heaven is a witness for the Lord Jesus Christ and lead souls to a saving knowledge in Jesus Christ.

If you are saved, you and I are both one day closer to seeing our Savior face to face. He is the One that gave me the hope I now possess. He is the One who gave me the commission and made me His ambassador, His representative. He is the One expecting a return on His investment.

May we be ready today as we go out into this world, seeking any and every opportunity to tell someone why it is we are expecting to go to Heaven when we leave this world.
