Acts 17:23 “For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.”
As saved children of God, we sometimes think too highly of what the unsaved know about God.
What I mean is that we assume they know what we know and accept what we know about God. We forget where we were when lost and what we needed to come to Jesus and be saved. We forget the blindness and ignorance we all had to the gospel until our hearts were open to receive it.
To many in this day and age, the God of the Bible is genuinely unknown to them. More and more are growing up without godly influences and we are reaping what we’ve sown. They think the Bible a book of fairy tales, and our God just a crutch to cope with the real world as they know it.
With the way many saved people act today, it is no wonder!
Far too many are using worldly remedies to do what God can do to comfort, to cope, and to conquer. We run to the medicine cabinet instead of the prayer closet. We see the doctors of this world when we first should see the Great Physician.
The world does not know the God of the Bible.
We who are saved should take this charge personally! They do not know because we have not shown them. He is unknown because we are not the light Christ called us to be in this ever-darkening world. We are to be more and more like Jesus – not the world.
Some would think we need to be like them to win them. Jesus tells us:
John 15:19 “If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”
If we are to be what God commands us, we will see opposition. Many are unprepared, and some fear of what might become of them. Unless we determine to follow Christ wholeheartedly, we will struggle, and the world will suffer because of it.
We must declare this ‘Unknown God’ to them who will listen. It begins with our relationship with Christ. When we are daily becoming more like Jesus, then others will see the marked difference in how we talk, and where we walk.
Unless we become more vocal in our witness, our walk will not reveal what they need to know. The Bible states clearly:
Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
It needs to come from the mouths of those who know.
Romans 10:14 “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”
We know that not all will come to trust Jesus Christ as their Savior, but every soul should be offered the opportunity to hear. Every person is asked to go out of their comfort zone for those in need. I must remind myself – someone did it for me, I must pay it forward.
There is a beauty we experience when we obey the command.
Romans 10:15 “And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
I have been present when the miracle of the new birth took place in a person’s heart. There is nothing like it! But it doesn’t end there. We must be willing to teach them the ‘all things’ we have been commanded to teach.
Matthew 28:19-20 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
The responsibility of this world’s ignorance of the gospel lies squarely with God’s children. We are to go and tell them. We must be ready to give a witness for the reason we have hope.
1 Peter 3:14-16 “But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.”
Know the One we are to show and then, show them what you know!
