Matthew 4:4 “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
A young man needs to know how to fight. At the very least, how to protect himself. Better to know how to handle a situation that may never come, than to be unprepared when it does. God tells us that we entered a fight the moment we got saved.
John 1:12-13 “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
If receiving Christ as my Savior makes me a child of God, I had to have been someone else’s child before that – right? But whose?
John 8:44 “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
Though Jesus was speaking directly to the Pharisees, it applies to all who are not His children as well. It is in this truth that we see at salvation, Satan lost our soul, and he now becomes our enemy.
Peter is clear as to who our enemy is.
1 Peter 5:8-9 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
Jesus instructs us, in our text today, that His weapon is our weapon when confronted with evil. The Word of God is a part of the armor available to every child of God.
Ephesians 6:16-17 “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God“
With faith as our shield and the Word of God as our sword, we can stand, and should stand against evil. Do not take the power of that weapon for granted.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
The Apostle Paul instructed young Timothy, in what he was going to face in the ministry.
1 Timothy 1:18 “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare“
Paul said that there is a good fight, which, in turn, would imply that there is a bad fight as well.
1 Timothy 6:12 “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”
Paul tells the church at Ephesus, who is our enemy.
Ephesians 6:11-12 “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
So, knowing that there is going to be a fight, knowing that my enemy is NOT of flesh and blood, knowing that I have been given the proper weaponry for that fight, I must be discerning in how to go about it. Thus, Jesus’ example provides for us the appropriate use of that weapon.
Think of it – Jesus could have exercised His Supreme power over Satan and banished Him from His presence. He could have done and used so many things that were at His disposal.
Yet, in one of His weakest moments here on earth, He is tempted to cross the boundaries placed on Him to fulfill the work the Father sent Him to accomplish. He was led to this place by the Spirit of God to be tempted.
Matthew 4:1 “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.”
He then says that every part and portion of my life is to be governed and guided by the Word of God. Jesus said we could not live without it. It was not something unknown to the Israelites.
Deuteronomy 8:3 “And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.”
The underlying truth is that God has thought of everything to give us the victory.
He said when you get saved, you will have an enemy.
He has told us there will be a fight.
He has given us proper weapons for that fight.
He has promised us the victory.
Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.“
Paul shares this with us in Romans.
Romans 8:35-36 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
Knowing all that we may face, he gives us this precious promise.
Romans 8:37-39 “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Did you hear that, child of God? MORE than conquerors! But be warned – that victory can only come through Him that loved us – Jesus.
Zechariah 4:6 “Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”
Settle your heart, child of God. Know that God has given us everything we need to be more than conquerors in this world, and in every fight, we will face. It is that precious Book, the Holy Bible, that gives us the victory.
Meditate on it.
Testify of it.
Tell others about it.
