Four Words

Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

God’s Word is powerful. It is sharp and alive.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

It exposes and it convicts. It will accomplish all that God said it would.

Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

In our passage, these very words of Christ pierced my heart and stayed with me for weeks after hearing them. The weighed heavily on my soul as I had thought much about the meeting I would have with God one day.

There were four words in that passage that scared me.

I never knew you.”

To hear those words is to be banished for all eternity in Hell.

For the saved child of God, it is a comforting balm to know you will never hear those words or feel the flames of Hell. For the unsaved, it finalizes a life of rejecting Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.

As we head into a holiday weekend here in America, many here will be busy with many things. May it indeed be that peace will be with you wherever you go and whomever you keep company. He alone is the focal point of your eternal destination. Without faith in Jesus Christ, you will hear those four fateful words, “I never knew you.”
