Acts 20:28 “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
Without structure and administration, no venture would ever survive.
The church’s business, leadership, structure, and administration should be set up biblically, not like the businesses of the world today.
We all have some version of church that we hold to.
Some are dictated by a denomination, others by a group of elders. Some might look like a dictatorship having one man make all the decisions. We may hold to our way of thinking and look at others and criticize or condemn them because they’re not like us.
In this passage, I see that the authority is dispensed FROM the Holy Spirit TO those God makes as overseers. As middlemen, we must realize our purpose and not take unto ourselves more power from the position or lord over others because of the place we hold.
We hear the stories of those who have abused their power and created a small kingdom for themselves. Others have put many into bondage to serve them more than serving God. God will deal with them accordingly – not according to how I think they should be judged.
In any case, there will always be leaders and followers. Much more simplistic – we are all followers who have been put in a position to fulfill our role.
I have often heard this statement, “Mind the Holy Spirit,” which means allowing Him to guide how things should go in the venture you invite Him to oversee.
From personal prayers to church meetings. From worship services to building projects. All should be submitted to the Holy Spirit to lead as the Father gives direction.
Zechariah 4:5-6 “Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”
Our sufficiency to accomplish any task should be by the Spirit’s power.
2 Corinthians 3:5-6 “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”
We have given ourselves permission to freely express our opinion about everything and everyone. Social media has seemingly removed the filter for our society to comment without moral, social, and polite guidelines. Not so for the child of God.
Just because most people hold to an opinion or siding together on an issue does not always mean they are right. Jesus said:
Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
Many religions tout many ways to Heaven. The Bible only has one.
John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Some think that because they can do what looks like Christianity on the outside, they will gain favor with God to earn Heaven. They will hear some of the saddest words spoken in the Bible.
Matthew 7:21-23 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
“I never knew you…”
I cannot imagine the horror of that moment when what you thought was an eternity in Heaven is now everlasting torment in Hell.
The rewards every child of God will receive come when our work on earth is judged in light of scripture.
1 Corinthians 3:13-15 “Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”
The work we do in the Spirit follows in obedience to the Father’s directive. God may call us to do something out of our comfort zone. Meaning, a work that may not utilize our gifts or talents but allows us to see what God can do through us when we yield to Him.
So, today, we as children of God realize that God has work for us to do that has already been before ordained.
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
