Proverbs 4:18 “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”
The darker the night, the brighter the light shines.
Jesus tells us that we are the light of the world.
Matthew 5:14 “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
That light is not self-generated. It comes from the One who is the true light.
John 9:5 “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Interesting that Christ should say, “As long as I am in the world…”
Man is trying to rid the world in which we live of any semblance of Christ. In America, we have removed Him from our schools and are paying the price of the unregenerate youth we have today.
On an even more global scale, the world is rejecting biblical Christianity and embracing humanism. Man has wanted to take God’s place since the devil tempted in the garden.
Adam and Eve believed the lie:
Genesis 3:4-5 “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
It may be easy to point the finger of blame on them, but we are just as guilty, if not more so.
We have the whole counsel of God in the Bible we hold in our hands.
We have every promise, every command, and every prophecy God intended for us to possess.
We have been given the key to knowing God.
We have the path to Heaven shown to us plainly from scripture.
We will not stand before God with the excuse that He didn’t give us the way to know Him and find Him.
Today, I thought just how bright is the path to God IF it solely depended on God’s children being just and shining as we are commanded?
How foolish to think that we will shine no matter how we live here on earth just because we are saved.
If we were to enter a place unfamiliar to us, we would struggle to find our way. But if we were to join with One who not only knows the area and the path but can illuminate the way, we would cling to them, would we not?
We are commanded to be that for the lost.
Romans 10:14-15 “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!“
The preacher here is not the vocation of a pastor but the office of one who proclaims the gospel to the lost. It is every child of God’s job to be a witness and a light to those in darkness.
When you and I follow our Savior as we ought, we can be the light they need to find Him.
John 8:12 “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
I found this passage today struck me in another way as well. Toward the end, the writer says:
“…shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”
But are we shining more and more, or are we becoming dimmer?
A lamp needs to be trimmed and full of oil to continue to burn brightly. To us, that is significant.
Trimmed is to be free from the weight of sin.
Full of oil is to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Knowing that, I ask again, “Are we shining more and more or becoming dimmer?”
The task is simple.
Burn brightly for Jesus.
Tell any and all who will listen to the gospel.
Maintain a pure heart and desire to stay that way until Christ comes.
