The Battlefield

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.”

We would like to think that the Christian life is easy, comfortable, and blessed. I mean, we’re saved children of God. A child of the King. Joint-heirs with Jesus Christ. Right?

While all of that is true, we are told that we are never at ease in this life. We have been called to be soldiers.

2 Timothy 2:3-4 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

As a soldier, we must grasp that we are in a constant battle with an enemy that is much smarter, craftier, and more experienced than we could ever hope to be. Knowing our adversary is key to winning the battle.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

He can cloak himself from our eyes to make us think he works for God.

2 Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

Often, we are deceived into thinking that man is our enemy. Tensions and contentions increase, and we forget who the real enemy is.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Understanding the outward oppression we face against a real enemy, we neglect the other battlefield we must conquer. That is the battle of the mind.

In today’s passage, Paul reminds us that there are things that will come at us to tear down our belief system and set up strongholds, which are belief systems based upon a lie.

Having a soldier’s mentality when it comes to our minds will aid us in this all-important battle.

1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;”

We must ever be on the lookout for the wiles or tricks of our enemy.

Every saved child of God must know their strengths and weaknesses. Our enemy does and will exploit them to defeat us. When we know that which tempts us and besets us, we can set up defenses against it.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

We all bring to this battle our will and our character. Each has varying degrees of both. But in this battle, none are a match for our enemy.

Our will is the determination and motivation that drives us. It is the ability to put forth the effort to accomplish our goals. We will expend the energy to get what we want when we want it bad enough.

Our character is those things we accumulate in life. Faithfulness, honesty, integrity, work ethic, loyalty, and obedience are some of the things we possess and are useful in this battle.

Each of us has degrees of each; some may rise above and be better than most. But in the grand scheme of things, we will all fall short and fail in this all-important battle against our enemy.

Our will and character are no match for Satan and his army of demons.

But…

When our will and character are yielded and submitted to the all-powerful One, there is nothing that can overcome us.

1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

That which is in us is more powerful than anything Satan can hurl at us.

We do not possess Him, we are His possession, and when we place complete and utter control in His hands, we can be victorious in every battle we face. Consider His promise:

Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.”

No weapon – not even that which the devil wields, can prosper. We have the promise of the One superior to our enemy on our side.

Having the full assurance of salvation, we can rest in the promise of victory given by the Sovereign God of the universe.

This battle has long been waged since the garden. God has never left us, nor will He forsake us. We must commit to the long haul and stay engaged in this fight. Whether within or without, we have been given the victory!
