1 John 1:6-7 “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
We all desire to associate with one group or another, one style, type of music, fashion, or political viewpoint. Some will try to detach themselves, yet they are more alike than they would care to admit.
I believe it is innate for us to want to belong. I have long believed that there are three fundamental needs of man:
To be loved
To be accepted
To be secure
Most are provided these when we grow, but not always.
Today, this passage speaks simply to our relationship with the Father. Walk with Him, and you will have light. If we walk in darkness, we will walk alone. Our situation and circumstance should only stand to identify our current status.
If we sin, we have an Advocate, Jesus Christ the Righteous. If we remain in our sin, it is our own choice. We cannot claim to be a victim when God has provided the way and has lit it clearly with His Word.
To belong to a church and claim Christ as Savior offers us a place within a living organism, not an organization. The church is a group of called-out believers; saved, born-again, children of God. To actually belong, you must be saved.
Religion muddies the waters by adding to or taking away from the Word of God. Our claim to Christianity is solely in the finished work of Jesus Christ. His death, burial, and resurrection are offered freely for all.
Once saved, we are received into the body of Christ.
Biblical baptism declares to the church our standing with Christ because of salvation and pictures our desire to depart from the old life and live as God guides.
This author’s prayer is that you have found the body of believers that God has called you to join. Within that body, I pray you not only find your place but grow as you continue to yield yourself to Him.
May you have a blessed Lord’s Day!
